Pressure Vessel Design Methods

ASME BPVC Section VIII

The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII provides rules for the design, fabrication, inspection, and testing of pressure vessels:

t = (PR)/(SE - 0.6P)

Where t is minimum thickness (in), P is internal design pressure (psi), R is inside radius (in), S is maximum allowable stress (psi), and E is joint efficiency factor.

Head Design

Different head types have specific design equations according to ASME standards:

t = (PD)/(2SE - 0.2P) [Ellipsoidal Heads]

For ellipsoidal heads (2:1), where D is inside diameter. Other head types (torispherical, hemispherical, conical, flat) have their own specific design equations.
